Although vehicles in general are attractive items for criminals to steal, recent data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) confirms that certain vehicle models are hotter commodities for thieves than others.

How valuable your vehicle is to a criminal can depend on a wide range of factors—including how effective your security systems are and how much money the thief can get for various stolen parts. Take a look at the following statistics from the NICB to help determine whether your vehicle is more likely to attract thieves.

According to the NICB’s latest report of the most frequently stolen cars in the United States, the most stolen vehicles in 2023 included the following:

  1. Hyundai Elantra (48,445 thefts)
  2. Hyundai Sonata (42,813 thefts)
  3. Kia Optima (30,204 thefts)
  4. Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (23,721 thefts)
  5. Kia Soul (21,001 thefts)
  6. Honda Accord (20,895 thefts)
  7. Honda Civic (19,858 thefts)
  8. Kia Forte (16,209 thefts)
  9. Ford F150 Series Pickup (15,852 thefts)
  10. Kia Sportage (15,749)

Always Be Prepared to Prevent Theft

Although thieves may target certain models more than others, you are not immune to vehicle theft just because your vehicle isn’t on the list. As such, it’s important to always take steps to reduce the risk of your vehicle being stolen. For starters, never leave your vehicle unattended while it’s running for any reason, and make sure to always park in a safe, secure location—whether that’s in your locked garage while you are home or in a well-lit, high traffic parking lot while you are out.

Employers should review their health plan’s design to confirm that it has been updated, as necessary, for these changes.

In August 2025, a tractor-trailer owned by a third-party freight carrier was transporting thousands of pounds of frozen hot dogs when it overturned and struck another vehicle on Interstate 83 while traveling through York County, Pennsylvania, resulting in the meat products spilling across the highway. According to local authorities, the incident occurred on a weekday morning during rush-hour traffic as the tractor-trailer was nearing an exit ramp. In this moment, the driver of the truck reportedly lost control due to an undisclosed mechanical problem, causing it to tip over, hit a nearby passenger vehicle and tear open the boxes of tightly packed hot dogs in the process.
